China’s advancement in nationwide investment and its leading position ahead of the United States, Europe, and Japan.

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) has released a national competitiveness ranking for cutting-edge technology research. In 19 out of 23 fields, including hypersonic and underwater drones, China ranks first, accounting for about 80% of the rankings. This reflects China’s advancement in nationwide investment and its leading position ahead of the United States, Europe, and Japan.

The ASPI analyzed 2.2 million papers published between 2018 and 2022, focusing on the 23 technologies prioritized under the trilateral security partnership known as AUKUS (Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States). They selected the top 10% most cited papers and collected information on authors to calculate each country’s share. In the four fields where China did not rank first, the United States held the top position.

In the field of “hypersonic” technology, which involves flying at speeds exceeding five times the speed of sound, China holds over 70% of the share, surpassing the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
