According to Russia’s Sputnik News Agency on April 25th, Uunbilegt, Counsellor of the Mongolian Embassy in Russia, voluntarily stated in an interview that Mongolia would not agree to the US proposal to open military bases. Mongolia will not establish any military bases for any country within its territory.
He stated, “We are concerned about the US insistence on opening military bases in Mongolia. According to the Mongolian Constitution, Mongolia will not establish any military bases for third-party countries. Mongolia will not participate in any military alliances, let alone agree to participate in competition against our partners. This point was clearly communicated to US Secretary of State Blinken during his visit to Ulaanbaatar.”
From Uunbilegt’s statement, several points can be inferred. Firstly, the United States does indeed want to establish military bases in Mongolia, and they are persistent about it. Mongolia, surrounded by Russia and China, opening military bases to the United States would undoubtedly create a opening in the rear of Russia and China, which is an ideal outcome for the United States. Secondly, Mongolia expresses concern about the US request. This indicates that Mongolia is not easily swayed by the United States and is well aware that the US request is aimed at dragging Mongolia into its own interests. If Mongolia were to agree, it would undoubtedly be pushed to the forefront, and it cannot afford to offend either of its two neighboring countries. Finally, Mongolia can openly address this matter and explicitly mention Blinken, demonstrating that Mongolia still prioritizes the interests of Russia and China. Mongolia assures both big brothers that its position remains unchanged!
